Non-CPAP treatment options for sleep apnea fall into categories such as lifestyle changes, other forms of PAP therapy, non-invasive devices, and surgical intervention. Some of the most common alternative treatments include expiratory positive airway pressure (EPAP) therapy, mandibular advancement devices (MADs), tongue stabilizing devices (TSDs), and positional devices.

It is important to work with your doctor when deciding on a treatment for your sleep apnea. If you discover that CPAP therapy isn’t right for you, your doctor will be able to discuss the pros and cons of each alternative treatment with you and provide guidance based on your unique situation and personal preferences.

Although PAP therapy is considered the most effective way to treat sleep apnea, there are many CPAP alternatives that work well for people who do not respond to or cannot adapt to PAP therapy. Some CPAP alternatives are best-suited to people with mild sleep apnea, while others can be used by people with moderate to severe sleep apnea.

Although EPAP is a type of PAP therapy, it is considerably different from CPAP and similar devices. Instead of providing you with externally pressurized air, EPAP devices are valves that fit into your nostrils and pressurize your own breath to keep your airways open during sleep.

Like CPAP machines, most non-CPAP sleep apnea treatments are considered medical devices and can only be purchased with a prescription. We offer complimentary consultations from our third-party independent network of board-certified sleep providers for customers who don’t have a prescription. Just place your order to start the process.

There are major differences between different types of CPAP alternatives, so the price can be significantly less or significantly more than the cost of a CPAP machine and equipment. Some CPAP alternatives have a limited lifespan, or include parts that must be replaced regularly, so it’s worth considering ongoing costs when deciding which treatment best suits your budget.

Although some insurance providers cover CPAP alternatives, whether or not you qualify for coverage will depend on your provider, the type of alternative treatment, whether or not you have tried CPAP therapy, and other factors. If you’re not sure whether your treatment is covered, you should contact your provider for more information.Sleep Doctor does not currently accept insurance payments, but we provide the invoices you will need to submit to your provider for reimbursement.
